Kansas City Weekend

We few weekends ago Ashley, my mom and myself took a Friday off work and headed to KC for a little lot of shopping and eating. My mom and I have gotten pretty familiar with KC over the past few years on our little weekend getaways but this was Ashley's first time! Not to KC, just to KC for a girls shopping weekend with us.

We started off Friday by hitting World Market and then continuing on to the Town Center area for a bit of shopping and lunch at North. We'd never been there before, it was yummy! And the atmosphere was nice too. Had the patio been in the sun we might have eaten outside. After Town Center we went to the Oak Park Mall and had dinner at the Nordstrom Cafe.

Saturday we headed down to the Plaza, got checked into the Sheraton and hit the streets. We all had pretty good luck. The weather wavered from perfect to chilly but the sun popped out at the perfect time or lunch on the upper deck at Brio. Ashley had a yummy raspberry mojito and I indulged in a sangria. From my last KC eperience I realized that I like "brunch" so I ordered the Eggs Oscar which was two poached eggs a crab and shrimp cake, potatoes peperonata, grilled asparagus, artichokes, spinach and lemon butter. Finished with housemade Hollandaise. I will definitely be getting it again.
For dinner we introduced Ashley to McCormick and Smicks which is a bit pricey but oh-so-good. I usually get the Filet Oscar but they didn't have it on the menu and hadn't made any Hollandaise sauce so I was forced to try something new. I decided on the Stuffed Shrimp which was Lump Crab Stuffed Shrimp, Red Pepper White Cheddar Mash. Another home run! My mom had the Stuffed Atlantic Salmon: Lump Crab, Bay Shrimp, Brie Cheese, Mashed Potatoes, Vegetables and it was equally as amazing. We of course had to end the meal with our traditional Chocolate Bag and it didn't disappoint. Oh, and I go a really awesome drink too! I knew I like Jameson and ginger ale but with the mint and lemon it was even better!
We finished off the weekend with brunch at Gram & Dun on Sunday morning before heading back. My mom and Ashley both had the B.N.B.: house-made biscuit, chicken fried bacon, country gravy, fried egg, breakfast potatoes. I think it might have been better than mine! I got the Carne Asada Frites again and loved them just as much. So that should tell you the B.N.B. is pretty dang delicious.

Ways to show Trina (and Jim) some love

First off, Jim's obituary was posted in yesterday's Newsleader. It is lovely. Click here if you would like to read it.

1. Visitation will be Thursday, September 20th from 5:00 PM - 8:00 PM in Gorman-Scharpf Funeral Home, 1947 East Seminole Street, Springfield. Celebration of Life services will be Friday, September 21st at 10:00 AM in Redeemer Lutheran Church, 2852 S. Dayton, Springfield.

2. The Alzheimer's Association Walk to End Alzheimer's is this Saturday, September 22. This year the Alzheimer's Association has decided they will be dedicating this years' walk to Trina's dad, Jim Appelquist. So please join us as we rally up folks to walk in his honor this Saturday (9/22/12) at 9 a.m. at Jordan Valley Park. If you can't make the walk and would like to donate instead just click here.

3. Play (or volunteer) at the 2nd annual Appelquist Foundation Golf Classic next Saturday, September 29 at Deerlake Golf Course. You can sign up online at appelquistfoundation.com or just let me know! It is $320 per four-person team ($80/person).

It is crazy how these things are all happening so fast and right around each other. I know Trina will be glad to honor her dad, but she will also need more support than ever these next few weeks. Keep her, and her family, in your prayers.

What to say?

Life has been a little rough these last 24 hours, and I know the next week won't be much better. One of my best friend's (Trina) dad lost his fight with Alzheimer's around 6:30 p.m. yesterday, September 12. What do you say to a friend who has just lost their dad? Not a grandparent, but a dad. Her daddy. See Jim was the young age of 60 and he was diagnosed with early onset Alzheimer's just four years ago. Trina and I hadn't become close friends yet, so I've only know her since the diagnosis, but I have heard so many adjectives to describe her father. And let me tell you, he was a good one. You can just tell by the way others talk about him. Funny, talkative, energetic, smart, sweet, athletic, caring, her rock; all of the things you want your dad to be. Sadly a lot of those qualities in him had been taken away during the past four years, but to her he was always dad. Still the man she loved more than anyone else in the world. Who's hand would comfort her in times of sadness or fear. And I am so sad for my friend that he won't be in her world anymore. Even with everything they have been through in the past four years, it is still unbelievable that the time has come to say goodbye. As she said to me this morning, "Did yesterday really happen?" Yeah it did. And it totally sucks. Really, what else is there to say?

So in the days and weeks to come just keep the Appelquist family in your prayers that they can adjust to life without their rock. That they can find comfort in the fact that Jim was a man of God and he is now free from his Alzheimer's and was welcomed into heaven with open arms.

I also wanted to share a post and video that Trina put on Facebook this morning:
My sister wrote this song a couple of years ago...very fitting for the next few days! Thank you for writing such a beautiful song, Steph! Dad was so proud of you!!!

Month 1=No Baby

I've been thinking this whole summer that maybe it would easier this time. The whole getting pregnant thing. Just stay positive. I just kept thinking maybe we've had our struggle. Maybe we will get pregnant the first month out of the gate. Maybe we won't have to dive back into the month to month emotional roller coaster that trying to have a baby can be. I mean it's not devastating (yet) but it is disappointing. Each time I start feeling the twinges of cramps my heart sinks a little deaper. That disappointment is quickly followed by the joy that I am having a regular cycle, which is great and means things should all be working correcting. I swear I wasn't being naive, just hopeful. Well, here we go again folks. One month down and it didn't happen like I'd hoped.

So as we dive into month two we definitely are "trying" but we aren't testing or charting or anything like that just yet. Trying our best to take everything one step at a time, one month at a time. And let me tell you, one month when you are trying is long. You only really get one shot a month. It is crazy how time just slows. Instantly. I noticed this same thing about a year ago when this journey began. A year. Who thought we'd be right back here again starting our "second month" of trying in September again. Crazy what life throws your way.

A bit of decorating

Tim and I purchased these really great National Park posters last summer on vacation and had yet to hang them. We were planning to put them in the office but then I had my Tortola and Yellowstone articles that were published in 417 Magazine framed so they've just been setting on the floor. Tim had a genius idea to hang them in the living room and they look awesome! Like my mom said, and I agree, "Makes your wall before look a little plain. But... I didn't think that before." Also in the office check out the new chair! A huge shout out to my grandma and dad for helping me, who am I kidding, for recovering it for me! I love it!
